This Menlo Park Residence is a study in residential placemaking that pays homage to Northern California Modernism. Situated in the heart of a beloved Silicon Valley neighborhood, this gracious single-family home is designed to echo the sensibility and values of its inhabitants. The blend of original design and thoughtful interventions are seamlessly bound together by a base palette of brick, steel, wood, and glass, prioritizing the capture of natural light while intentionally deploying screening and sound buffering solutions throughout.

Modern Menlo Park residential renovation exterior with a clerestories, large glass windows, and wooden siding, surrounded by native plants.

The luminous interior features both intimate and double-volume spaces, allowing for dramatic light from strategically positioned picture windows and skylights. These elements are designed to take maximum advantage of animated sunlight and shadowplay throughout the day.

The home's communal spaces accommodate interconnected living areas that flow seamlessly from the kitchen to the dining and living zones. The vast shed roof with exposed beams provides the framework for these spaces, while the entrance to the bedroom wing is defined by a wood-framed obscured glass wall. Sliding pocket doors lead to a quieter bedroom hall, illuminated by a high ribbon window of borrowed light.
